JACK

Levi Eckhart was the cutest baby I’d ever seen. Pictures and videos were nothing compared to the real thing. He looked like a miniature Eckie, with the same square jaw, gray eyes, and black hair. Getting him home was a grand production involving bags of clothes, food, and other supplies, along with many toys and books, not to mention a travel crib. All that for one night! Among the toys were two little hockey sticks and a ball Eckie said Levi loved. After we got the car seat installed and Levi buckled in, we left for home. His commentary along the way was hilarious, a combination of actual words and nonsense sounds that Eckie repeated back to him like they were having a genuine conversation.

Once we got everything upstairs into our apartment, Eckie had to go to the bathroom, and I stayed with Levi. We sat on the floor, and he tried to have a nonsense conversation with me. Not fluent in baby talk, I eventually said, “Aren’t you the sweetest little thing? Did you know you look like your daddy? That’s good because he’s the handsomest guy in the world.”

“Ridiculous!” Eckie walked across the room and sat down beside us. “Jack’s the best-looking man there is, and I like him a lot.”

He gave me a peck on the lips, and Levi clapped.

“Oh, I forgot to tell you, Levi’s big on kisses.”

Eckie gave me another smooch, this one longer, and Levi laughed.

“Aw, you want one?” Eckie leaned close to Levi and blew a raspberry on his cheek. The baby giggled, and Eckie turned his head to the side so Levi could give him a big smack. Afterward, Eckie beamed at him. “That was the best one yet! I love your kisses.”

“Da!” Levi pointed at me. “Da!”

Eckie chuckled. “He wants to kiss you. Like father, like son.”

Feeling slightly foolish, I bent over and put my cheek in front of Levi like Eckie had. The world changed as soon as his lips touched my skin. My stomach flipped, my chest warmed, and my eyes filled up. Eckie’s son was kissing me, and the surge of emotion was extraordinary. After I returned the favor, we all must have spent five minutes rolling on the floor, laughing and having a love-fest. After another sweet kiss from Levi, I met Eckie’s eyes, full of pride and affection. He gathered Levi and me into a hug and kissed us both.

God, I’ve already fallen for Eckie, and now I’m falling for his son, too.

“Burbs!” Levi called out, and as suddenly as the loving had begun, it was over. “Burbs, burbs, burbs.”

Confused, I glanced at Eckie.

“He wants to read his bird book.”

“He can read?” I asked. Kill me now.

Eckie snickered while he got up and dug through one of the bags until he found the right book. The cover featured a colorful array of birds, and Levi clapped again when Eckie showed it to him. He picked up the baby and moved to the couch, setting Levi beside him.
